How long should I expect to be in this program?

For optimal results, you should stick with the program until you’ve completed the 25 assignments. Some assignments can be compounded and completed within a week; others may take a week or more depending on how much practice time you need to complete them. While I believe that 3 to 6 months is a manageable amount of time to make it through the process, I would advise you to not rush through the steps of this growth system. At every stage, put your best foot forward and be honest about how long you need to produce meaningful results. Steady and consistent growth supersedes crammed assignment submissions.

What is your teaching philosophy?

“THE ONE WHO DOES THE WORK DOES THE LEARNING” - TERRY DOYLE

As a teacher, it is a natural compulsion to give my students all the answers. But I have found that information that the student discovers his or herself tends to mean more and stick longer because the student had to work to obtain that information. It is easier to remember discoveries than it is to remember lectures. With that in mind, I constantly explore creative ways to facilitate the growth of the people I work with. And while the answers don’t come as quickly for the student, the benefits of personal discovery are much more rewarding.

“SOUND OVER THEORY”

This statement is not meant to diminish the importance of understanding music theory. However, I have encountered extraordinary musicians who know a lot of music theory as well as extraordinary musicians who know little to no theory at all. The commonality amongst these musicians is their deep relationship with the instrument they play and their ability to produce meaningful sounds that connect to the people listening to their music. Therefore, I believe that students of music should acquaint themselves with the sounds they love and/or hear in their mind and then reverse engineer the theory of how and why those sounds work.

“LESS IS MORE; SMALLER IS BETTER”

It is better to know a few things deeply than many things superficially. Extracting 10 seconds of a recording and internalizing it can yield more benefits that brushing through a 3-minute recording. It is more manageable to take small, bite-size chunks of information from your musical heroes and explore the possibilities of that information until it becomes a natural part of your style than it is to gloss over your heroes’ entire bodies of work. Accomplishing small, focused assignments increases one’s motivation and ability to accomplish larger, broader challenges.

“GROW IN COMMUNITY”

Consider the following Proverb written by King Solomon:

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Personal practice often happens in solitude, but we should seek opportunities to experience music with other people. Engaging with peers, teachers, and mentors allows us to grow in the context of community instead of feeling alone in our musical journeys. While it is nice to pick up tips from online resources, learning from people around us tends to have more of a memorable, lasting impact on our musicality.

“EMBRACE MUSIC THAT YOU LOVE”

In this modern age of technology, we are overstimulated with access to more music than ever before. While the quantity of music today isn’t an issue in itself, many musicians are overwhelmed with the challenge of knowing what artists or songs they should study. My personal recommendation is to introspectively assess the artists and songs that you love and begin studying there. Be aware of what you don’t know but need to know to become proficient in your craft. But never abandon the sounds that inspire you. Embrace these sounds as they will unlock the keys to your musical conception and get you closer to becoming the musician you’ve always wanted to be.
